My Journey in Archery with Olympic Archery in Schools

My start in Archery came as a L1 OAS coach almost 8 years ago. I would assist Jenny Baldus (Corner Lake Middle School coach) once in a while. The issue was that we did not have a HS for our MS school kids to continue Archery. I transferred to the HS that the MS feeds into and started the OAS program with an Easton Foundations grant for 4 targets and 13 bows. After a couple seasons I started to fundraise and lobby for my own space on campus. Those efforts have grown into a full 20-yard 10 lane Indoor AC range, and 12 bale outdoor range up to 70 meters. I then went and got my PE state certificate, and the school has given me 2 archery specific classes per semester to teach to HS students for a PE credit. We also host the UCF archery club on our campus as well. To accomplish these things as well as year-round archery I coupled our OAS program with a USA Archery club, making all my members become USA archery recreational members at minimum, to minimize liability. When I host events from Jamborees to Post Season, I often procure Insurance through my USA Archery club for that OAS event. OAS is a great program and has been the bridge from recreational archery to competitive archery with WA rules, targets and distances. If not for OAS I may have never discovered my love for archery and coaching.
